"Where Warriors of the Rainbow succeeds is where its Chinese counterparts so often fail, and that is in creating an emotionally engaging story that flows naturally into violence and action, rather than a flat story that uses plot points only as excuses to get into the action. The thematic use of ethnic pride and the characters subtle and realistic self-doubt and inner conflict all come through heroically in the face of a story that could very easily have fallen into melodrama."

“Stunning cinematography captures the untamed beauty of Wushu, a tribal township on Mount Chilai, where the concept of freedom is inextricably linked to hunting wild animals through lush undergrowth – a ritual at risk as civilisation takes hold.”

It is a beautiful looking film, with writer/director Wei Te-Sheng making great use of the stunning jungle locations, and at its best it offers a fascinating – and almost anthropologically frank look – are aboriginal culture. Warriors Of The Rainbow: Seediq Bale is a visceral and powerful action drama and even more memorable given it is based on a true story.

“Stunning to look at...the Taiwanese action saga is recounted in a spectacular, almost non-stop sequence of grisly hand-to-hand combat scenes. No martial arts here, but skillfully realistic fighting with spears and machetes, guns and cannons, which spare no one.”
